Quote of the Day: Crazy Is As Crazy Does
February 21st, 2010 admin

I am Dr. Amy Bishop! — Amy Bishop , the biology professor accused of shooting six of her colleagues at the University of Alabama, to a woman she punched in the head at the International House of Pancakes. (The woman had tried to take a booster seat that Bishop wanted for one of her children. Bishop was charged with assault in the 2002 incident and sentenced to probation. She now faces murder and attempted murder charges in connection with the University of Alabama shootings.) University of Alabama – Alabama – Amy Bishop

It has been a while since we last wrote about Gerald Ung, the Temple Law student who was arrested in January for shooting Edward “Eddie” DiDonato Jr. (a former college lacrosse star who also has a legal connection — his father is a partner at Fox Rothschild, the prominent Philadelphia firm). Today we have two updates. First, a reader alerted...

Today brings an update in the case of Gerald Ung. The Temple Law fourth-year got in trouble earlier this year for being the wrong kind of gunner . While other Temple students have recently appeared in these pages, sporting legal tees and trying to get undergrads out of their tees , it’s been a while since we’ve heard news of Ung. Our...
An Israeli court has convicted an Arab man of rape on very interesting grounds. Haaretz reports : Sabbar Kashur, 30, had consensual sex with a woman after he posed as a Jewish bachelor interested in a long-term relationship. When the woman found Kashur was not a Jew but an Arab, she filed a police complaint that led to charges of rape and indecent...
(Eugene Volokh) The Vancouver Sun reports. The judge found the mother guilty of manslaughter and not murder, which in context sounds like a judgment that she did not intent to kill her 14-year-old daughter. But the mother’s conduct still seems appalling enough to merit serious punishment, even in the absence of an intent to kill: Magomadova was charged...
The shootings on the university campus opened a window into the pressure-cooker world of biotechnology start-ups, where scientists often depend on their association with academia for a leg up. Ms. Bishop was part of a start-up that had won an early round of financing in a highly competitive environment, but people who knew her said she had learned...
Via Berman , welcome to the future. It may have started as the movie Minority Report , but it should come as no surprise that an academic says he’s done it. Richard Berk , a professor of criminology and statistics at the University of Pennsylvania has developed software to predict which defendants on probation are most likely to commit...
The image of having the members of one branch of government standing up, literally surrounding the Supreme Court, cheering and hollering while the court — according [to] the requirements of protocol — has to sit there expressionless, I think is very troubling. — Chief Justice John G. Roberts , answering a question from a University...
(Eugene Volokh) The letter, from Juneau (Wisconsin) County District Attorney Scott Southworth, is here . The D.A. is complaining about the new state statute on sex education ; some of his objections: [T]he new law … [p]romotes the exual assault of children — §118.019(2)6 requires schools to provide instruction on how to utilize contraception....
Wholly unrelated, but there have been a number of posts lately on the subject of crazies. Norm Pattis complains of the Connecticut Trial Lawyers Association’s attempt to deny defendants the opportunity to assess the craziness of a plaintiff who alleges that defendant made him crazy. As Norm says, that’s just crazy. Over at Popehat...
